Pic of the Week: Couple at Customs House
September 22nd 2009 07:23
This isn’t a very good photo. The sun light had already receded behind Customs House*, leaving it looking rather drab.
But I like it.
The reason? The couple on the steps.
I was carefully lining up the shot and being a nuisance to other pedestrians (thank you to the two patient young ladies who waited so very politely and with smiles, no less), when a couple walked into view and sat down. They didn’t look like they were going to be leaving anytime soon, so I went ahead and took the picture.
Their presence made the otherwise dull photo interesting. I like how they were all dressed up as though to complement the formality of the old building. But when you look closer, you begin to see the contrasts.
Nothing says casual quite like fast food, and there’s a bottle of water and a Maccas cup there on the steps, which would remind those of us who have been there that there’s a MacDonald’s across the street from Customs House. And if you look to the right of the drinks, it looks like the young lad might’ve been wearing trainers.
If only the red of the young lass’ dress came out better…
*Customs House is a heritage building at 31 Alfred Street, Circular Quay.
