Pic of the Week: Catching your own food

October 21st 2009 03:45
Teppanyaki barbecue beef

The only food I’d ever caught and eaten was fish until I stepped into this Japanese barbecue restaurant.

Diners had the option of cooking their own food, having their food cooked for them by a chef, or having their food cooked for them by a chef who would then throw most of it at them.

I wouldn’t have thought that I’d ever pay for a meal where I’d get burns, stains, and find stray grains of rice in unlikely places afterwards, but as it was a birthday dinner, we opted for the theatrics.

It was great when we managed to catch streaking chunks of omelette with our bowls, and when some of us caught steaming morsels with our mouths, though more often than not, the food ended up in our laps, chairs, hair, or at our feet.

Everyone had a great time catching flying bits of food, and it was pretty funny at times, but once is enough for me. I’d rather have good food go into my belly than go to the floor.

tomato avocado cream cheese crackers

I still look at this photo with the same horrified fascination as when I took it. The snakes with their gaping jaws look almost alive.

Ocean Trout Gravlax Aperitif Sydney French food photo
Ocean Trout Gravlax

Aperitif is a cosy little restaurant in Kings Cross about 5 minutes from Sydney’s CBD. The cuisine is Mediterranean leaning more toward French, as does the charming décor. The menu is designed for sharing and consists mainly of scrumptious morsels like the ocean trout gravlax shown above. Here are examples of some of the other beautifully presented, delectable fare you can sample at Aperitif
