Update on James Patterson Chain Thriller, AirBorne

March 26th 2009 03:39
The first chapters of the chain thriller are now online with the 7th chapter loaded onto the Borders website today.
James Patterson Chain Thriller AirBorne

Regarding the actual writing of AirBorne, over half its 30 chapters have been completed. The first few chapters online are a good read. It’s quite an achievement seeing that each author only had an evening to write their chapter.

Among the writers are a few students, managers, a writer/mother of three, an actor and an acupuncturist. Each chapter comes with the writer’s profile, starting with James Patterson’s.

AirBorne

Bio-scientist Peter Moore uproots his family from Atlanta for a
Luna Park entrance night
new job in Sydney. In hope of remedying their 3 day long jet lag, Peter, his wife Lesley and 13-year-old daughter Amanda makes a late trip to Luna Park.

Amanda is abducted at the amusement park and Peter soon receives a message demanding a virus he had worked on in the US in exchange for his daughter’s life. When Lesley receives a call from a stalker she thought she’d left behind in Atlanta claiming to know about Amanda, Peter is left agonizing over how his past actions could cost him his family.

It's an interesting idea to have a book published in instalments on the internet and it will probably be a hit. For me though reading a book is enjoyable and between Orble and everything else I do on the computer, I would much rather take a break from the screen and read the hard copy.

Hey Janet - I know what you mean . I felt I had to do a follow-up post on this competition, so I started reading the story... now I have to know the ending!

About the hard copy for this book, I think it might be best to print it off the internet. The 28 authors will get one each and you can win a copy from the Borders website, but I don't think they intend to publish anymore at this stage. But I guess it'll all depend on how popular it turns out to be.

Great to hear everyone enjoyed reading Airborne!

I just stumbled onto this website, and thought I'd leave a comment.

I was lucky enough to be selected as one of the writers (Chapter 17).

It was a LOT of fun, and I think we had a great group of people.

cheers

Hi Rusty,

Thanks for the warm welcome

It looks like a great blog you've got here!

I'm glad you enjoyed reading Airborne. I'm sure I'm not the only writer who had some very nervous times as each deadline thumped forward a lot more rapidly than expected.

So I'm glad what came out the other end was enjoyable!

I also had the honour and please of talking to James Patterson on the phone after the project, and I've got to say he is a really nice guy, and really willing to spread around the massive amount of industry experience he has.

Again (and I don't say this lightly), I'm really glad you enjoyed reading it - I know we all had a lot of fun writing it!

cheers
Sam

Oops, pardon the late night typo: What I meant to say was "honour and pleasure".

cheers

OMG! Sam! You won the one-on-one class with James Patterson?! Another round of (belated) congratulations are in order!

It can't have been easy writing a chapter - and writing it well - in so short a time. I recall one of the chapters was written by the folks from the publishing company and wondered if the winner that was supposed to write it ran out of time or something.

Are you working on anything at the moment, if you don't mind me asking?

And I have to ask this: Any words of advice on writing fiction for budding writers?

Thanks again for dropping in, and thanks for the great read!

Yes, that was me - James Patterson picked my chapter as his favourite, and I had the chance to talk with him on the phone, which was brilliant.

It was pretty nerve-wracking writing the chapters, as you just never knew what was going to happen to the story just before your chapter came up!

But a lot of fun, still!

We were a little behind when we got to me chapter, and so I only had a few hours to write mine (well technically I had until the next morning, but I do enjoy my sleep and I can't write early in the morning. I'm a night person!).

Lots of fun though!

Any advice for budding writers? Sure!

Keep writing - write lots! And read lots.

Reading is VERY important. Make sure you're reading quality writers, as well, as that's how you learn and grow. Keep an eye out as you read, see how the author is building scenes, creating tension, twisting plots, building characters, etc.

And as you keep reading and writing, you'll just notice your own writing getting better and better.

Also, talk to other writers! It's something that helps me get through those dark editing hours.

If you like, I've recently started a forum:

www.aussiewriters.net

It's still very new, and currently small, but you're more than welcome to join in!

There's a lot of the Airborne writers in there, but it's open to anyone who is interested (not just Aussies, incase there are other people interested).

It can be quite revitalizing talking to other writers....or at least, that's what I find!

cheers
Sam

Sam, it is so awesome that James Patterson liked your chapter the best! And you only had a few hours to write it!

Thanks for the great writing advice, and thank you for the invite – I would love to join the forum. You had me sold with the getting through the “dark editing hours” part. I’m having a crazy week, but I’ll sign up as soon as I can!

Thanks for commenting! See you at the forum!
