Garden Sculptures

March 3rd 2009 01:32
Here are some more photos I took when I last passed through the Sydney Botanic Gardens. These ones, as promised by the post title, are of some of the sculptures.

Lewis Wolfe Levy Fountain
This fountain with a bronze statue of a girl and a heron among reeds was commissioned in 1889 by the family of Lewis Wolfe Levy, a businessman and politician. It was made by C.B. Birch.

The following three pieces are located in the Herb Garden.

Herb Garden Sundial
The sundial is made of silicon bronze and weighs 1500kg. It commemorates Malcolm Arnott (1910-1991). It was designed by John Ward and Margaret Folkard in Adelaide and cast by Dave Mune in Victoria, 1994. The herbs on the ring were modelled in clay by Adelaide sculptor Karen Rumpf using drawings by Gardens’ illustrator, Marion Westmacott.

Nellie Stewart Memorial
Nellie Stewart Memorial Sculptor’s name
This bronze memorial was presented to the citizens of NSW by the members of the Nellie Stewart Old Drury Club in 1938. Nellie Stewart was a popular actress who was born in Woolloomooloo in 1858 and died in 1932. The Gardens website doesn’t say who made the memorial, but someone signed and dated it (What do you think? CH Eccles?).

Herb Garden Birdbath
This birdbath commemorates Hope Clayton (1907-1991), a friend of the Gardens. It was designed and made by Peter Mueller in 1994.

Sex and Death Topiary
Shown below are beautifully sculpted topiary on the manicured lawn behind the Tropical Centre (a work of art itself) that was promoting Sex and Death, an exhibition of orchids and carnivorous plants.

Precious Trees

February 27th 2009 01:47
I know next to nothing about art (or trees, for that matter), but there is a sculptural appeal to trees that often has me putting my battered, little camera to more work than usual.

Among the tree collection in the Royal Botanic Gardens are ones planted around its establishment some 200 years ago, and other trees which are rare in the wild and difficult to collect today. Shown here is a very small fraction of the trees you’ll find in the 30 hectare Gardens
