Drawing another crowd

Theodore Gericault The Raft of the Medusa

I was among the gawkers and photo takers surrounding this street artist outside the QVB. He had taken about 5 months replicating in pastel this grim piece, The Raft of the Medusa (1819) by Théodore Géricault. All this wet weather we’ve been having must have been annoying for him.

On reading up a little about the original painting, it brings to mind the recent disaster in Italy. Apparently, the wreck of the French naval frigate Méduse in 1816, on which the painting was based, was mostly blamed on an incompetent captain.

Pic of the Week: Couple at Customs House

couple on steps of Customs House Sydney

This isn’t a very good photo. The sun light had already receded behind Customs House*, leaving it looking rather drab.

Street artist drawing on large canvas

Buskers tend to be quite physical and/or audible in order to attract attention if you think of the musicians, contortionists and jugglers. But not street artists like this guy.

Precious Trees

February 27th 2009 01:47
I know next to nothing about art (or trees, for that matter), but there is a sculptural appeal to trees that often has me putting my battered, little camera to more work than usual.

Among the tree collection in the Royal Botanic Gardens are ones planted around its establishment some 200 years ago, and other trees which are rare in the wild and difficult to collect today. Shown here is a very small fraction of the trees you’ll find in the 30 hectare Gardens

Food photos: Aperitif at Kings Cross

Ocean Trout Gravlax Aperitif Sydney French food photo
Ocean Trout Gravlax

Aperitif is a cosy little restaurant in Kings Cross about 5 minutes from Sydney’s CBD. The cuisine is Mediterranean leaning more toward French, as does the charming décor. The menu is designed for sharing and consists mainly of scrumptious morsels like the ocean trout gravlax shown above. Here are examples of some of the other beautifully presented, delectable fare you can sample at Aperitif

Sydney pictures: Part 2

If you happen to be in Sydney during the Christmas season, you’ll see a few massive, sparkly trees about.

One of these trees is usually found in Martin Place in the central business district
