Pick your own cherries
November 21st 2008 00:18
Where
Young, “The Cherry Capital of Australia”
Olympic Hwy, South-west region of NSW
2 hours from Canberra, 5-6 hours from Sydney
(Other areas please see below.)
Go to the "What to See & Do" page for a list of participating orchards and their contact information as well as for other attractions in Young.
It is best to call and ask if the cherries are ready for picking to avoid disappointment.
When
Mid November to December
Why
Quality – you’ll know exactly what you’re paying for and you can’t get fresher than straight off a tree.
Cost – call the orchards to find out how much they’re asking per kg.
What to bring/wear
Sunscreen
Hat
Insect repellent
Drinks – it’s hot, sticky work
Avoid wearing thongs – there could be bindies and fallen twigs in the grass
You might also want to bring an empty box. This is for your bag(s) of cherries when you leave so that they won’t get crushed in the boot/trunk. There will be plastic bag lined buckets to use while you’re at the orchard.
OTHER STATES please see PickYourOwn.org. This site has an extensive list of pick-your-own farms (fruit/vegetables/Christmas trees) around Australia.

When I was a kid, I'd pick cherries and eat them off the tree until I got sick!

They do get quite pricey, don’t they? I’d go cherry picking more often if the orchards weren’t so far away... :9~
