The Best Patch of Grass

February 20th 2009 00:05
please walk on the grass

I do love a place which has a Visitor’s Code as follows:

Please walk on the grass! We also invite you to smell the roses, hug the trees, talk to the birds and picnic on the lawns.

There is nothing quite like the feeling of one’s bare feet sinking into a luxurious carpet of cool grass on a hot day, and a place where you are invited to walk on such heavenly grass is none other than the Royal Botanic Gardens in the heart of Sydney.

The Botanic Gardens was established in 1816 and is home to the largest and most diverse continuously cultivated plant collection in Australia. It currently has 18 Feature Gardens including the Cadi Jam Ora: First Encounters garden where visitors can learn about the Indigenous inhabitants, the Cadigal.

Native wildlife and numerous artworks can be found throughout the gardens and there is a Gardens Shop and Visitor Information area at the Palm Grove Centre. Other facilities include guided tours and wheelchair hire. Restaurants, cafes and kiosks are also available at the Gardens.
