Sci-fi Favourites
November 26th 2007 12:02
There are many great sci-fi shows around, but I like the following the most not only because of things like jaw-dropping creativity, pace and a great mix of delightful characters – but also because they have the right amount of humour (oodles in some of them).
Doctor Who
I’m talking about the new series here. The energy of the Doctor is infectious. Even episodes featuring very little of him are superb - like the episode Blink with those super fast (and freaky) Weeping Angels. Time travel has never been more fun.
Firefly
If gun-totin’, space-travellin’, Mandarin spoutin’ cowboys running from the authorities and violent cannibals can’t pique your interest, I don’t know what will. Too bad it only lasted a season. Luckily, the movie Serenity provided a little closure and some very cool moves from the disturbed and disturbing young River.
Red Dwarf
Seasons 4 and 5 are the best, but there are gems all throughout the series. Who can forget Rimmer in that red and white checked dress talking to Mr Flibble (a penguin hand puppet) about how to kill the crew? Smegging marvellous!
Stargate SG-1
There’s a certain charm about people who can have a few laughs while they’re saving the galaxy. The incorporation of ancient mythologies and legends makes their adventures that much more intriguing. The series has sadly ended, but the spirit continues on in Stargate Atlantis.
Futurama
This cheeky animated series has no slow episodes. All the characters are wonderfully weird and one of them is hilariously vile (Zapp Brannigan). Love it when they break into song too. This series is so kooky it makes you wonder what the writers were on.

Film & TV on DVD
The greatest sci fi show of all time though belongs to The Twilight Zone or Outer Limits
