The Best Patch of Grass

February 20th 2009 00:05
please walk on the grass

I do love a place which has a Visitor’s Code as follows:

Please walk on the grass! We also invite you to smell the roses, hug the trees, talk to the birds and picnic on the lawns.

There is nothing quite like the feeling of one’s bare feet sinking into a luxurious carpet of cool grass on a hot day, and a place where you are invited to walk on such heavenly grass is none other than the Royal Botanic Gardens in the heart of Sydney.

Sydney Botanic Gardens shady path

The Botanic Gardens was established in 1816 and is home to the largest and most diverse continuously cultivated plant collection in Australia. It currently has 18 Feature Gardens including the Cadi Jam Ora: First Encounters garden where visitors can learn about the Indigenous inhabitants, the Cadigal.

Native wildlife and numerous artworks can be found throughout the gardens and there is a Gardens Shop and Visitor Information area at the Palm Grove Centre. Other facilities include guided tours and wheelchair hire. Restaurants, cafes and kiosks are also available at the Gardens.

See where the bricks that built Sydney came from on a 550 metre Ring Walk. The walk is 18.5 metres above the century-old Brickpit, which is also home to the endangered Green & Golden Bell Frog.

Four shaded sections of printed wall panels provide visitors with information about the area along the way.

Breakfast and Golf

Sydney Olympic Park Golf Centre hitting bays
Spend $15 or more on breakfast on the weekend and receive 70 range balls free at the Sydney Olympic Park Golf Centre. If you don’t want breakfast and free balls, you can still go and practice your swing, chipping and putting or enjoy a round of mini-golf (remember to wear a hat and sunscreen!).

Interested enough to try but not interested enough for lessons? Complete beginners can get a few tips (like how to hold the club) from the staff behind the counter

Bows and Arrows for Fun

Orlando Bloom with his pretty Barbie tresses looked like he was having fun shooting all those arrows in LOTR and he probably was enjoying it. That's because archery is fun – and very satisfying when your arrow hits the target. Want to give it a go?

Along with many sports facilities and 425 hectares of parklands, Sydney Olympic Park also plays host to live shows, sports games and other events throughout the year. Whatever your interests may be, you’ll find something to your liking there.

Drawn to the Museum of Contemporary Art by the extravagant 18th century costumes made from gorgeous Dutch-wax printed cotton, I was somewhat surprised by the sight of headless mannequins in such finery posed in various acts of debauchery under a suspended carriage (link to photos below).

***Updated 23 February 2009***

Bring your picnic rugs and beach chairs to watch a movie under the stars! You might also want to bring a jacket in case the night gets cool and insect repellent to keep the mozzies away. I realise I’m a bit late in putting this together… some free events have ended and most of the tickets for the Open Air Cinema have been sold… D’oh! The following screenings take place during summer with the exception of the Drive-in theatre, which is open all year
